Blog EntryJerseyAug 24, '08 10:06 AM
for everyone

We are looking  after a friend's cat called Jersey and Lorna brought the cat over here on the Friday. Well the first day she mostly hid behind the settee and other dark places but yesterday she came out and was more relaxed. She sat on L's lap and mine and wanted to be stroked and her tummy rubbed (L does that to me sometimes!).

Last Sunday i didn't get to the boot fair til midday due mainly to a hangover from a PRS visit the previous night,  and today not gone as yet as i didn't wake up early. I think i was very tired yesterday and secondly the weather is getting colder and the prospect of getting up for 5 -6 am is less attractive.

I will probably go anyway, once i finished my breakfast.

Blog EntryWhat I have Been listening To This MorningAug 21, '08 10:50 AM

Some more listening and pruning of the collection -

Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass - Sounds Like (A&M LP 1967)

Well known charity shop find. Perhaps only worth it for the version of "Wade In The Water" and it has "Casion Royale" otherwise justt too eazy and parpy. Shall keep it though.

Temptations - Masterpiece (Motown LP 1973)

Another classic Norman Whtitfield production with one of the top Motown acts who gave us more soul than pop than most of the acts on the label. My copy is a little crackly but plays fine. Top tunes are the ballad "Hey Girl (I Like Your Style)", the long and funky title track, clocking in at 13'54 mins , and "Law of The Land". You could even file this under psychedelic soul, and despite the presumptuous title of the album, it is quite close to that one word.

George Benson & Joe Farrell - Benson & Farrell (CTI LP 1976)

To some jazz fusion sounds like a dirty word and that is only due to some appalling muzak being toted under that banner (i.e Najee anyone?) but with the CTI label it is what mostly free of such rubbish. This collaboration between Joe and George is firmly on the funky side of that tag. The sound is more cool and sophisticated but with fine toe tappers like "Flute Song" , ""Camel Hump", with Joe's flute well to the fore, then changing to sax, and a latinged version of "Old Devil Moon" makes this another winner.

What is On The Decks

What music i am playing now -

Seigen Ono - The Green Chinese Table (Virgin Venture LP 1988)

East meets west in this post minimalist classical melange. Beautful, introspective and yes melodic!
Infact after a night of Djing it comes over all relaxing and karmic in an ambient way without falling into that wallpaper muzak hole that many albums of its ilk falls into.

Average White band  & Ben E. King - Benny and Us (Attlanric LP 1977)

An underrated album in my opinion. This seems like a perfect marriage of Scottish funk with the soul of a legendary artist such as Ben E. King. High praise indeed but i believe is justified.
I must state from the outset that i do have a soft spot for AWB ever since "Pick Up The Pieces". Ben takes the lead vocals on this outing. There is so many fine tracks on this Lp with my favourites being "Get it Up for Love", "A Star In The Ghetto" and "What is Soul?". If you see this cheap in the racks buy it

Three evenings of PRS visits to clubs over the weekend has left me a bit tired but at least it is done now. Also a lovely visit to Wakehurst Place on Saturday to do a mystery shop visit in the Stables Restaurant there. Wakehurst is part of Kew and it was nice going around the grounds there as the weaher turned out quite sunny. The meal was excellent and the service was really quite good.

My PRS visits was The Ocean Rooms,Kulture and last night Yates.

Today final day on the Field Tyres survey  Free film event tomorow seeing the next Hellboy film at the Odeon with GC.

Amongst a whole load of problems encountered recently i do have some good news to convey. So now that is in the bag, It is time to work on other pubs  whichhave vinyl evenings such as the St.James Tavern and a couple up Western Road including the Wick.

Just to point out that the  "Jungle Drum n Bass" You Tube clip of the Xian dancers was from Brass Monkey at VG+ and that came to him via somebody else.  Still I think it is funny and should be shared here too, esp. if none of you seen it yet. Respect.

Blog EntryBrillo August , LondonAug 12, '08 3:21 PM
for everyone
Well it was that time of the month - the London Brillo up in Islington at Filthy McNasty's pub last night.

Just three platters at the end -

Howard Tate - It's Too Late (Turntable 45)
A great slice of soul from Lloyd Price's label. Must check out more on this imprint.

Janis Ian - Insanity Comes Quietly To The Structured Mind (Verve LP)
From her "For All The Seasons Of Your Mind" album a very young Janis going somewhat psych-folkie mirroring my state of mind at the time.

Bob Rogers - Seven Kings (Chapter One LP)
Good driving Hammond organ fingersnapper from a very cheesy album otherwise.

I did enjoy their Thai Green Curry beforehand. Spicy and highly recommended.

It would have been better if the pub actually had some real ale  (Black Sheep Ale) but a decent Guiness and a couple of free ones made up for it.,plus hearing some strange sounds i have not heard of before, and hence blew my mind, meant it was a journey well spent.

That Can track is amazing. Only got it on the CD ,which i haven't heard for ages and no wonder i did not  recognise the track. "ALL GATES OPEN"   - will play it tonight.

So where are you going?

I am going to Brillo.

With whom?

On me own, GC ain't come.

What will you be wearing?

A steel hat and this -

And no tracks by the Police. No jazzy weirds inthat m'lad.
Yet still i feel a threatened species about to be "deleted". (ref. Dr Who)

Last night i did a PRS in Hove and on the way back popped into the Quadrant for a few beers. My Finnish friend, Ville Lojado (i think that is his name as his writing is appalling), was spinning  some vinyl with a mate. It seems the guys who run the Quadrant now want to cover all the nights available, hece my eason to keep on badgering them for a spot.

He played a blinding set too!

Blog EntryVenue UpdateAug 9, '08 2:25 AM
for everyone

Mixed bag today - first off a survey for the council at Field Tyres for a couple of hours then a mystery shop at Wickes in Eastbourne and finally a PRS DJ vist at the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove. On the way back i did pop into the Quadrant to see the state of play regarding my DJ spot there and it still sounds positive despite no firm commitment from them.

I really want this venue and will gladly prostrate myself to obtain it.

So here we are at the 8th FTLC (First Tusday Lunch Club) , this time at La Strada, and we kind of pushed the boat out. usually we keep to a ten pound bufget.

But this time we spent close to twenty each. Main course, sweet and coffee! Desert was Pannetone Al Forno  for me and Tony, Pannacotta for GC and  Torta della Nonn for Peter. But it is gorgious food there.

Mike could not make it, and Lesley for some reason didn't turn up, so next time we have devised forfits for both of them.

GC's friends Tony and Peter are pictured at the far end of the tasble.
